Ledger Live — Login & Security
Practical guidance for signing into Ledger Live safely. Learn how the login works, why it’s different from web logins, and simple steps to keep your funds secure.
How Ledger Live login works
Ledger Live uses a local application password (not a cloud account) to protect your app data on the device you install it on. The real cryptographic protection comes from your Ledger hardware wallet: private keys live only on the device and all transactions must be confirmed on its screen. This design keeps custody with you — not with an online service.
Typical login flow
- Open Ledger Live and enter your local app password.
- Connect your Ledger hardware (Nano S / Nano X / Stax) via USB or Bluetooth (Nano X).
- Approve any transactions or account requests on the device display.
🔒 Tip: Ledger Live's password protects your app UI and local settings. Your 24-word recovery phrase and device PIN are the ultimate keys — keep them offline and private.
Troubleshooting common issues
If Ledger Live won’t recognize your device, try a different USB cable or port, ensure the device screen is awake, and confirm firmware is up to date. If you forget the app password you can reinstall Ledger Live and reconnect your Ledger hardware — your funds are recoverable with your recovery phrase.
Best practices
- Download Ledger Live only from ledger.com/start.
- Never enter your recovery phrase into any computer or website.
- Use a strong, unique app password and a password manager if helpful.
- Verify transaction details on the device screen before approving.
